Heartworms can cause a variety of medical problems affecting the lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys. Any of these problems, alone or in combination, can lead to death.
The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) has alerted us that intestinal parasite infections are on the rise in our area. As a result, we are now recommending annual fecal tests for all of our patients. Additionally, we are recommending year-round preventative for the common parasites in our area: roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia, and giardia.
Fleas not only make pets and people miserable, but can cause serious health problems as well. Fleas are widespread, blood-drinking parasites that can transmit tapeworms and cause flea allergy dermatitis. The presence of ticks has exploded in our area in recent years. Ticks carry a wide range of diseases that negatively affect the health of our pets. It is imperative to keep them on preventative year-round and test for tick-borne disease exposure anually.
